Katy ISD Earns Texas Educational Theatre Association’s Highest Honor for Excellence in Theatre Education
For families who value strong fine arts opportunities alongside academics, Katy ISD has added another statewide recognition to its growing list of achievements.
The district has been named a Texas Educational Theatre Association (TxETA) Exemplary District Award of Distinction recipient, the organization's highest honor, recognizing school districts that demonstrate exceptional commitment to theatre education, student success and artistic excellence. The award highlights not only the quality of Katy ISD's theatre programs, but also the district's investment in creating opportunities for students to learn, perform and grow through the performing arts.
The recognition reflects years of support for theatre education across Katy ISD campuses, where students have opportunities to develop confidence, creativity, leadership and collaboration while participating in productions, technical theatre and University Interscholastic League (UIL) competitions.
Katy ISD Recognized for Excellence in Theatre Education
The TxETA Exemplary District Award of Distinction is presented to Texas school districts that exceed expectations in multiple areas of theatre education. According to the Texas Educational Theatre Association, the award recognizes districts that demonstrate excellence through high-quality theatre productions, strong support for theatre technology and technical theatre programs, access to appropriate performance and rehearsal spaces, administrative support for theatre education, and student participation and achievement in University Interscholastic League (UIL) theatre competitions.
Rather than recognizing a single production or accomplishment, the award honors districts that have built comprehensive theatre programs capable of sustaining excellence year after year.
TxETA noted that districts earning the distinction demonstrate exceptional dedication to dramaturgical learning, theatrical creativity, student development and meaningful community engagement through the performing arts.
A Commitment That Extends Beyond the Stage
Katy ISD Assistant Director of Fine Arts Susan Chiboroski said the recognition reflects the shared vision of educators, administrators and students across the district.
"We work to create dynamic and inclusive environments where theatre education can thrive at the campus and District level," Chiboroski said. "This award affirms the vision and sustained efforts that inspire students, empower teachers and positively impact the community."
District leaders say Katy ISD's fine arts programs are designed to help students discover their talents while encouraging excellence both on stage and beyond graduation. Theatre education often helps students strengthen public speaking, collaboration, problem-solving, creativity and confidence—skills that extend well beyond performances and into future careers and everyday life.
By earning the TxETA Exemplary District Award of Distinction, Katy ISD surpassed the organization's already rigorous standards for theatre education.
What is the Texas Educational Theatre Association?
Founded to strengthen theatre education across Texas, the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TxETA) serves theatre educators and students through professional development, networking and statewide educational opportunities.
The organization supports teachers year-round by providing instructional resources, lesson plans, mentorship through the Texas Teacher Network, summer workshops and its annual TheatreFest convention, where educators exchange ideas and learn new instructional techniques. These ongoing programs are designed to help both new and experienced theatre teachers continue building successful programs for their students.
TxETA also offers numerous opportunities for students interested in theatre. During its annual TheatreFest, students can participate in workshops covering acting, directing, lighting, stage management, design and production while learning from experienced theatre professionals. The association also hosts one of Texas' largest college audition opportunities, allowing student performers to be viewed simultaneously by more than 125 college theatre directors and professional training studios.
Together, these programs help strengthen theatre education throughout Texas while creating pathways for students pursuing both educational and professional opportunities in the performing arts.
Why This Recognition Matters for Katy ISD Families
While academic performance often draws the most attention, statewide honors like the TxETA Exemplary District Award of Distinction demonstrate the value of a well-rounded educational experience.
For Katy ISD students interested in theatre, the award signals that they are learning in a district recognized among the best in Texas for supporting performing arts education. For parents, it reflects continued investment in programs that help students build communication skills, creativity, teamwork and self-confidence alongside academic achievement.
As Katy ISD continues expanding opportunities across academics, athletics and fine arts, recognitions such as this reinforce the district's reputation for offering comprehensive educational experiences that prepare students for success both inside and outside the classroom.
