Fort Bend County Libraries Offer Free Wellness Workshops in Missouri City and Richmond This July

Katy / Fulshear  /  Katy / Fulshear
July 01 2026

Residents looking for free wellness programs in Fort Bend County this July will have several opportunities to strengthen their mental, emotional and physical well-being through a series of educational workshops hosted by Fort Bend County Libraries. Taking place at the Missouri City Branch Library and George Memorial Library in Richmond, the free events cover topics ranging from emotional wellness for mothers and healthy nutrition for teens to mindfulness techniques designed to help reduce everyday stress.

As more people seek practical ways to improve their overall health, Fort Bend County Libraries continues to expand its community programming beyond traditional library services. By partnering with local educators, health professionals and community organizations, the library system is providing accessible opportunities for residents to learn skills they can apply in their daily lives—at no cost.

Fort Bend County Libraries Continue Expanding Community Wellness Programming

Serving communities throughout Fort Bend County, Fort Bend County Libraries offers far more than books and digital resources. The library system provides year-round educational programming, technology access, workforce development resources, literacy initiatives and community events for residents of all ages. In recent years, health and wellness programming has become an increasingly important part of that mission, helping connect residents with trusted information, practical life skills and local experts in welcoming community spaces.

Because wellness extends well beyond physical health, this month's free workshops address emotional, nutritional and mental well-being, recognizing that each plays an important role in building healthier families and stronger communities.

Free Emotional Wellness Workshops for Mothers at Missouri City Branch Library

Among this month's featured presenters is LaKayla Walker, owner and creator of The BLOOM Company, which she describes as "a space for moms to grow, heal, and feel seen." Walker is also a certified public educator of 13 years with a master's degree in childhood development and family studies.

Walker recently shared an encouraging message with members of her Bloom Circle community.

"In 2026, let's stop rushing who we're becoming and start honoring where we are. The growth. The stretching. The unseen work. It all counts," Walker said. "If you're a mom who's learning to balance it all, choosing optimism, and figuring it out one season at a time, this space was made for you."
She added:

"You don't have to do this alone."

Walker will lead the two-part presentation, "From Overwhelmed to Equipped: Emotional Wellness for Mothers," on Tuesday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 22, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Meeting Room at the Missouri City Branch Library, located at 1530 Texas Parkway in Missouri City.

Designed for new mothers, single mothers, married mothers and those raising toddlers, school-age children or teenagers, the interactive sessions combine Walker's professional expertise with her personal experiences as a mother, entrepreneur, family life educator and motherhood coach.

According to Walker, many mothers don't realize how imbalance can affect their emotional wellness, which in turn influences how they navigate the challenges of motherhood.

"This is an emotional wellness workshop designed to support mothers through emotional wellness, healthy coping strategies, and strengthening families," Walker said. "These sessions will be interactive and will provide practical tools mothers can apply immediately in their daily lives."

The program is sponsored by The Friends of the Missouri City Branch Library. For more information, residents can contact the Missouri City Branch Library at 281-238-2100

Teen Nutrition Workshop Helps Fort Bend County Students Build Lifelong Healthy Habits

Teenagers across Fort Bend County are also invited to participate in "Steps to Better Health: Teen Edition," presented by Fort Bend County Human and Health Services.

The free workshop will be held on Wednesday, July 16, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Room 2C at George Memorial Library, located at 1001 Golfview Drive in Richmond. A second session will be offered on Aug. 20 at the same time and location.

Designed specifically for students entering grades 9-12, the workshop explores how nutrition affects mood, energy levels and long-term health. Participants will learn how to build balanced meals, "eat the rainbow," make healthier beverage choices and avoid the blood sugar rollercoaster. The session also includes hands-on practice reading nutrition labels and practical strategies teens can confidently use in everyday life.

For additional information, residents may contact George Memorial Library at 281-342-4455

Mindfulness and Junk Journaling Workshop Offers a Creative Way to Reduce Stress

Residents looking for practical stress-management techniques can attend the "Mindfulness Series: Mastering Me—Junk Journaling Edition," taking place on July 23 and July 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Missouri City Branch Library.

The workshops will be led by Andonnia Maiben, Prairie View A&M Extension Agent with PVAMU – Wellness In Houston. Maiben holds a master's degree in sociology, is currently pursuing a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and has 12 years of experience in mental wellness studies.

Junk journaling—a creative practice that uses recycled and found materials to build personalized journals or scrapbooks—has grown in popularity as a mindfulness activity because the process encourages participants to focus on the present moment while creating something meaningful.

"Many people are in need of stress reduction; mindfulness is a way to address that need. Junk Journaling is a mindfulness practice that allows one to focus their attention on their present creative pursuit – the construction of a scrapbook with the freedom of found materials and memory making," Maiben said.
She added:

"Spend an hour focused on creative freedom and walk away with a project that you can say helped you release some stress."

Because all supplies are provided by the Prairie View A&M Extension Office, class size is limited to nine participants. Interested residents are encouraged to register early. For more information, contact the Missouri City Branch Library at 281-238-2100
