Royal ISD Approves Balanced Budget, Employee Raises and Benefit Increases for 2026-27 School Year

June 22 2026

Royal ISD is heading into the 2026-27 school year with a balanced budget, increased employee compensation, and higher district contributions toward health insurance benefits.

During its June 15 meeting, the Royal ISD Board of Trustees approved a series of budget and compensation measures that district leaders say are intended to support employees while maintaining financial stability. The actions come after the district balanced its budget during the 2025-26 school year for the first time in four years, according to district officials.

Among the approved changes are raises for teachers and returning employees, student outcomes stipends, and a significant increase in the district's monthly contribution toward employee medical insurance.

Health Insurance Contribution Increased

One of the largest changes approved by the board was an increase in the district's monthly health insurance contribution from $225 to $375 per employee, a $150 increase. According to board documents, district administrators recommended the change to make Royal ISD's benefits package more competitive while remaining within budget.

The board also considered and approved updates to employee pay plans and stipend schedules as part of its preparations for the upcoming school year.

Part of a Larger Financial Picture

The budget decisions were made as trustees continued discussions surrounding the district's 2026-27 financial plan during a budget workshop held at the same meeting.

For residents, the approved budget reflects the district's effort to balance day-to-day operational needs with investments in staffing, student programs, and employee retention. School districts across Texas continue to face rising costs and ongoing competition for teachers and support staff, making compensation and benefits a key part of annual budget discussions.

In a recent community update, Royal ISD described its progress as the result of ongoing efforts by students, educators, staff, families, and community members working together toward shared goals. District leaders noted that while challenges remain, they believe the district is continuing to move forward through incremental improvements and long-term planning.

Looking Ahead

With the budget now approved, Royal ISD will begin implementing the compensation changes ahead of the 2026-27 school year while continuing work on other district initiatives discussed during the June meeting.

Additional budget details and future financial updates are expected to be shared throughout the summer as preparations continue for the start of the new school year.
