Comal County Honors Deputy Rick Alvarez After 17 Years of Dedicated Service
For nearly two decades, Deputy Sheriff Richard "Rick" Alvarez has been a steady presence in Comal County, serving residents with dedication while helping keep the community safe. This week, the Comal County Commissioners Court paused its regular business to recognize Alvarez's 17 years of service as he officially retires from the Comal County Sheriff's Office.
For residents of New Braunfels and throughout Comal County, Alvarez's retirement marks the close of a career defined not only by law enforcement, but by the relationships he built with fellow county employees, members of the judiciary and the community he served every day. As communities continue to grow across Comal County, the experience and institutional knowledge of long-serving public servants like Alvarez remain an important part of the county's history.
A Career Built on Service to Comal County
During the Commissioners Court meeting, county leaders recognized Alvarez for nearly two decades of dedicated public service. While he spent 17 years with the Comal County Sheriff's Office, Alvarez's law enforcement career spans more than 30 years, including 19½ years with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), 17 years with the Comal County Sheriff's Office, and 1½ years with the New Braunfels Police Department.
During his time with the Sheriff's Office, he served as bailiff for Comal County Court at Law No. 1, where he worked alongside Judge Randy Gray while continuing to support public safety and the daily operations of the court.
County officials noted that years of dependable service like Alvarez's often happen quietly, with public servants showing up day after day to perform the work that helps communities function safely and effectively. His retirement provided an opportunity to publicly acknowledge that commitment.
A Heartfelt Farewell
As he prepares for retirement, Alvarez shared a message of gratitude for the people he worked alongside throughout his career.
"Thank you for all my friends in all of the County offices for always being kind to me."
He also reflected on the support he received from fellow employees during his years of service.
"Thank you for my coworkers respecting me and always giving me a chance to help the work place be a place to enjoy."
Alvarez also expressed appreciation for those he served alongside during his time as the bailiff for Comal County Court at Law No. 1.
"I will miss serving as a Bailiff for Judge Randy Gray. It’s been an honor serving the community with Sheriff Mark Reynolds. I praise his entire team of Deputies and Administrative Staff for keeping the community safe."
He concluded his farewell with a blessing for those who continue serving the public and a traditional law enforcement sign-off.
"God Bless all the Comal County employees, God Bless all Law Enforcement in New Braunfels, and Comal County and God Bless all State L.E.O.'s. I’m 10-7 for retirement."
Recognizing Those Who Serve Behind the Badge
While retirements often signal the end of one chapter, they also serve as reminders of the countless hours public servants invest in their communities. Law enforcement officers, deputies, bailiffs and county employees play essential roles in maintaining public safety, supporting the judicial system and serving residents throughout Comal County.
As Alvarez begins retirement, Commissioners Court's recognition highlights the value of honoring those whose careers have helped shape the community over many years.
For residents of Comal County, Alvarez's retirement is both a celebration of a well-earned milestone and an opportunity to thank one of the many public servants whose work has helped make the county a safer place to live, work and raise a family.
