Broadway Central Market Unveils Newly Renovated Food Service Area as Major Store Transformation Continues in San Antonio

For many San Antonio residents, a trip to Broadway Central Market is about more than grocery shopping—it's a destination for discovering new flavors, picking up fresh meals, and finding ingredients that are difficult to find anywhere else. Now, customers have another reason to visit as the store celebrates the opening of its newly renovated food service area, marking one of the biggest milestones yet in its multi-year transformation.

The newly completed section brings together many of the store's most popular departments—including the café, deli, bakery, sushi, chef-prepared foods, and grab-and-go offerings—into a redesigned space intended to make shopping, dining, and exploring even more enjoyable. The opening represents another major step toward the Broadway location's full renovation, which is expected to be completed in 2027.

A Fresh Take on One of Central Market's Most Popular Destinations

Customers entering the renovated area will notice a brighter, more open layout designed to showcase the craftsmanship behind Central Market's made-in-store foods.

"We are eager to start introducing pieces of what's coming, and today, we opened what I believe to be the most exciting parts of the store," said Katherine Miller, Broadway Central Market Food Service Director. "This new space provides a renewed culinary experience for our customers and Partners and a place where we can connect and celebrate with our community."

The renovated food service area features updated equipment, new fixtures, and expanded production spaces that allow Central Market's culinary teams to prepare even more fresh foods on site throughout the day.

Bakery, Deli, Sushi and Fresh Meals All Under One Roof

The refreshed food service section offers an extensive lineup of fresh-made selections designed for everything from quick lunches to special dinners.

Highlights include:

  • Bakery: The bakery now features an artisan bread wall, fresh house-made tortillas, and an expanded pastry service showcasing breads and baked goods prepared in-store.

  • Deli: Customers will find freshly sliced meats, an expanded cheese selection, and a self-serve Mediterranean and olive bar.

  • Chef-Prepared Foods: The chef-prepared department includes seasonal entrées, freshly made sides, rice and noodle bowls, sushi, hot soups, and a full-size salad bar. A newly developed burger and sandwich program joins longtime customer favorites.

  • Grab-and-Go Convenience: For shoppers on the move, the area also offers breakfast tacos, prepared salads, sandwiches, snacks, and beverages ready to take home or enjoy immediately.

Renovated Café Offers Coffee, Smoothies and House-Made Gelato

The food service area connects seamlessly with the store's renovated café, which reopened earlier this spring after relocating from the center of the store to the building's northern end near the dedicated Café entrance.

Visitors can enjoy Central Market-roasted coffee, fresh-made smoothies, and house-made gelato while relaxing in an expanded dining area featuring additional indoor seating. The redesign also adds multiple self-checkout registers to help streamline purchases for customers stopping in for a meal or coffee.

A Store Designed Around Food Discovery

Since opening its first location in Austin in 1994, Central Market has built its reputation around offering an experience that goes well beyond a traditional grocery store. As the specialty grocery division of H-E-B, Central Market now operates 10 locations across Texas, serving communities in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Plano, Southlake, and San Antonio.

Known for its European-inspired, serpentine shopping layout, Central Market emphasizes fresh, high-quality foods and culinary exploration. Stores feature expansive produce departments, extensive seafood and cheese selections, thousands of wine labels, specialty grocery products sourced from around the world, and hands-on cooking schools that have helped cultivate a loyal following among home cooks and food enthusiasts alike.

That focus on craftsmanship and food education has long set Central Market apart, and the Broadway renovation continues that tradition by creating more space for Partners to prepare foods fresh throughout the day while giving customers greater visibility into the culinary experience.

Renovation Progress Continues Across the Store

The newly opened food service area is just one phase of the comprehensive renovation underway at Broadway Central Market.

Several major improvements have already been completed, including:

  • A renovated pharmacy with drive-thru service
  • An updated Curbside pickup area
  • Expanded parking with additional spaces
  • New sidewalks and pedestrian pathways
  • Refreshed Partner break rooms and administrative offices
  • Improvements to the loading dock
  • Portions of the store's updated exterior façade

Construction now shifts toward the store's front end, where updated checkout lanes and a redesigned floral department are scheduled to open this fall.

Following that phase, renovation work will move into the meat market and seafood departments before the overall project reaches completion in 2027.

What It Means for San Antonio Shoppers

As each phase opens, Broadway Central Market continues to evolve while remaining open to serve customers throughout construction. The newly completed food service area offers an early glimpse of the modernized shopping experience the finished store will provide—one centered on fresh foods, convenient prepared meals, and gathering spaces that encourage customers to linger a little longer.

For longtime shoppers, it's the return of many familiar favorites in an updated setting. For first-time visitors, the renovation highlights what has made Central Market one of Texas' most distinctive grocery destinations for more than three decades.

As work continues through the remaining phases, San Antonio residents can expect additional updates as the Broadway Central Market renovation moves toward its anticipated completion in 2027.
